Dorchester Illustration of the Day no. 1956 Pumping Station

Dorchester Illustration of the Day no. 1956

The following is from : http://www.nearchitecture.com/buildings/ma/calf_pasture_pumping_station.html

The Calf Pasture Pumping Station was the first sewage pumping station in Boston. It was commissioned as part of a plan to alleviate a growing problem of air quality in the city due to accumulating sewage. Boston built a network of public sewage lines which terminated at the Calf Pasture station where the waste water was then pumped through a tunnel under Dorchester Bay to Moon Island and then released into the ocean.

The building was designed by architect George Albert Clough, and built on Old Harbor Point which was a remote location at the time of construction.

The building was completed in 1883, although additions were made several times afterward. It continued as the main headworks of Boston’s sewage system until 1968 when a more modern facility was constructed on Deer Island.

Dorchester Illustration of the Day no. 1954

Looking from the Milton side of the Neponset River bridge in Lower Mills, we can see the Ware and Pierce Mills.  The 1902 Ware Mill was named after former Milton chocolate manufacturer Dr. Jonathan Ware (1797-1877), and the 1872 Pierce Mill at the corner where Adams Street turns was named for Henry Lillie Pierce (1825-1896), president of Walter Baker and Co. from 1854 until his death.  Postcard postmarked Dec. 2, 1907.

Dorchester Illustration of the Day no. 1953 Cora L. Etheridge School

Dorchester Illustration of the Day no. 1953

The playground at the corner of Harbor View Street and Dorchester Avenue once was the location of a school building.  Constructed between 1874 and 1884 the school building was first called the Everett Primary School (different from the Everett School on Sumner Street).  Later it was known as the Harbor View Street School.  By the time the photo was taken in 1953 for publication in the Boston Herald, the school was known as the Cora L. Etheridge School.  The photo has a label on the back with info: an old wooden structure, with portable, which had been in use for many years.  The main building had two wings angled off from the central structure.

Cora Etheridge seems to have been an Assistant at the school.

The Putnam Nail Company, located on Port Norfolk, was the leader in manufacturing horse-shoe nails, and usually their trade cards pictured horses.  This trade card is just a charming illustration.
